GPR and seismic imaging in a gypsum quarry
نویسندگان
چکیده
Ž . A combination of ground penetrating radar GPR and seismic imaging has been performed in a gypsum quarry in western Europe. The objective was to localize main cracks and damaged areas inside some of the pillars, which presented indications of having reached stress limits. The GPR imaging was designed from classical profiles with GPR processes and a customized, PC-based image-processing software. The detection of energy reflection seems to be an efficient process for localizing damaged areas. Seismic tomographic images have been obtained from travel time measurements, which were Ž . inverted using a simultaneous iterative reconstruction technique SIRT technique in order to provide a map of seismic velocities. The imaging and techniques employed are compared herein. The two techniques are complementary; seismic tomography produces a map of velocities related to the state of the pillar’s internal stress, while radar data serve to localize the main cracks. Moreover, these imaging processes present similarities with respect to the damaged zone detection. q 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Coincident GPR and ultra-shallow seismic imaging in the Arkansas River Valley, Great Bend, Kansas
The primary objective of the work-in-progress reported here is to compare near-surface imaging results using ultra-shallow (upper 3 m) seismic-reflection techniques and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) at an alluvial site near Great Bend, Kansas. Although various seismic and GPR surveys have been used for near-surface imaging, little i s known about how the two techniques might work in concert fo...
متن کاملDeterministic Deconvolution of Ground‐Penetrating‐Radar Data at a Limestone Quarry
A 30 m by 30 m two-dimensional grid was designed on a flat bench behind a quarry face of predominantly limestone with thin shale layers located at a Bonner Springs, Kansas site to test the utility of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) for stratigraphic studies. GPR data were collected along seven lines parallel to the quarry face and seven lines perpendicular to the quarry face, each separated by 5...
متن کاملPhotographing layer thicknesses and discontinuities in a marble quarry with 3D GPR visualisation
An important problem of marble-quarry management is assessing the quality and the homogeneity of quarry blocks before excavation. In this study, we decided to image the limestone, which we studied in a marble quarry, in terms of layer thickness, discontinuities and cavities using the ground-penetrating-radar (GPR) method. The method was successfully applied to detect and map the fractures with ...
متن کاملForward Seismic Modeling: the Key to Understanding Reflection Seismic and Ground Penetrating Radar (gpr) Techniques
Forward modeling of reflection seismic data is a computational process through which a geologic model (units: horizontal distance, vertical depth; layer acoustic impedance) of the subsurface is transformed into a synthetic reflection seismic record (units: horizontal distance, 2-way travel time; reflection amplitude). Synthetic seismic records (synthetics) are often generated both before and af...

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is an effective and practical geophysical imaging tool, with a wide set of applications in geological mapping of subsurface information. This research study aims at determination of the geophysical parameter differences in the subsurface geological structures and construction of a 3D fracture model. GPR and resistivity methods were applied to detect the unstable t...
